TITLE:                                Mechanic/Handyman

 

DESCRIPTION REVIEW:          Personnel employed who can independently perform

                                                                        skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of

                                                                        automobiles, school buses and other mechanical and

                                                                        mobile equipment to use in a county school system.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:               -Have or be willing to obtain the required inspectors

                                                                        license and commercial operator’s license.

                                                                        -Possess a valid a CDL license or be willing to obtain

                                                                        one.

                                                                        -Have a high school diploma/GED

                                                                        -Have good health, physical stamina and be capable of

                                                                        performing heavy work.

                                                                        -Be able to use related tools and equipment.

                                                                        -Be able to communicate, read, write and perform

                                                                        simple mathematical computations common to the

                                                                        trade and follow written instructions.

                                                                        -Have previous verifiable experience and/or training

                                                                         as a mechanic.

                                                                        -Exhibit a high moral character, a good physical

                                                                        appearance, and be cooperative.

                                                                        -Have ability to develop and maintain an effective                                                                            working relationship with others.

                                                                        -Pass state developed tests to indicate minimum

                                                                        competencies in each area of job classification as title

                                                                        or hold/have held such title of employment with a

                                                                        county board of education.

                                                                        -Demonstrate success in performing a wide variety of

                                                                        tasks requiring an understanding of and proficiency in

                                                                        mechanical repair of school automobiles, buses, trucks

                                                                        and other mechanical and mobile vehicles.

                                                                        -Be capable of operating a recovery vehicle.

                                                                        -In addition to the above criteria the applicant will be

                                                                        evaluated on her/his ability to respond to practical

                                                                        situations related to the specific requirements of the

                                                                        posted position.  This evaluation will occur during the

                                                                        interview and throughout the selection process.

                                                                       

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:                      Director of Transportation/Chief Mechanic

 

SELECTION:                                                 The position is filled by the Board of Education

                                                                        upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of

                                                                        Schools.

 

SALARY AND EMPLOYMENT:                Salary based on service personnel’s salary schedule.

TERM:                                                           Employment term 250 days.

 

 

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

 

  1.   Diagnose and repair all automotive and truck equipment.

  2.   Make immediate vehicular repairs when defects are discovered. 

  3.   Report vehicle and equipment deficiencies to supervisor.

  4.   Communicate with drivers to insure understanding of malfunctions or complaints on vehicles.

  5.   Report to the mechanical foreman upon completion of assigned job for his final inspection.

  6.   Furnish a reasonable amount of small tools.

  7.   Attend training sessions as scheduled by immediate supervisor.

  8.   Keep current on information pertaining to automotive and truck repair.

  9.   Help to promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work

        connected areas.

10.   Display initiative.

11.   Communicate freely within the chain of command.

12.   Produce work of high quality.

13.   Is willing to work overtime and/or a flexible schedule when necessary.

14.   Set up and supervise a system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies and the

        keeping of records and inventories.

15.   Complete maintenance records, including cost, for each vehicle assigned.

16.   Record all work completed and time required properly, including body or chassis work.

17.   Return tools and equipment to proper location after use.

18.   Road test all vehicles after completion of repairs if necessary.

19.   Be knowledgeable of emergency procedures, and prepared to respond to emergency situations

        at any time.

20.   Perform routine scheduled preventative maintenance inspections for assigned vehicles.

21.   Prepare vehicles for state inspections and possess a WV Inspectors’ License as required by

        law to perform vehicle inspections.

22.   Assist in maintaining a current inventory of supplies and equipment.

23.   Assist in the preparation of an active file on maintenance and service records of vehicles in the

        fleet.

24.   Wash down service bays, restrooms plus break room.

25.  Clean the external building area so as to maintain a neat appearance.

26.  Check bus parking lot for damage, trash and other debris.

27.  Check bus lot and garage building and report any needed maintenance to supervisor.

28.  Perform routine manual tasks in any operation of the county school system.

29.   Perform such other tasks duties and assume such other responsibilities that may from time to

        time be assigned by the Superintendent or immediate supervisor.
